Geocache Description:

Alilitsa Cave

Did you know that in Macedonia there are more than 800 caves? Half of them are even not registered and investigated

General information, location and legends

One of the most famous cave, which belongs to the category of natural caves rarity, is a beauty called Alilitsa (Alilica). It is located about 3.5-4 km east of the village of Tresonche, in the valley of Tresonechka River, on the Bistra mountains in the beautiful countryside of the national park Mavrovo, enveloped by dense deciduous forests between villages Galichnik and Lazaropole. All the surrounding of this cave system is formed of limestone layers, several hundred meters thick. The cave complex consists of two openings (channals): Lower and Upper Alilitsa, which are interconnected by vertical and slanting channels, and the total length of the cave channels is 590 m. Entrance to the cave is narrow, vertical channel depth is more than 20 meters, the real challenge for speleologists, but only a few steps away, in front of you will spread a large cave gallery.

On the path to Alilitsa cave

Alilitsa, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful caves in Macedonia, in its impressive rocky womb conceals art with beautiful geo-morphological forms, called cave ornaments. You will be welcomed by timeless stalactites, stalagmites, catchments, corals and other unusual shapes, enriched with high waterfalls and underground clear, transparent lakes. A few years ago the speleologists found in the cave fossilized bones of prehistoric bear. Who knows what is to be found next? Inside the caves it is cold and dark, and the silence is disrupted by strong noise of the water flow. I hope that for those, who like to explore the underground world, visiting this cave would be an exciting experience and an unforgettable adventure.

Bistra Massif

There are several legends about the origin of the name of the cave Alilitsa. According to the most famous, it comes from the time of the Ottoman Empire. There was some Alil Pasha, returning one day from collecting fees on Miyak villages. Nearby the caves he was attacked by robbers, so he hid the gold into the cave. According to some legends, Alil returned later and took the gold, according to others, the gold is still hidden somewhere deep in the cave ...

Resting spot near the Lower Alilitsa

A little bit of science

This cave is located on quite inaccessible and difficult terrain. The cave system consists of two caves: Lower (Macedonian: Dolna) and Upper (Macedonian: Gorna) Alilitsa, associated with vertical and slanting channels. The terrain between the openings of the Lower and Upper Alilitsa is a very steep, slippery, covered with decomposed limestone material tend to slide. This rocky slope ends almost in the river flow.

The entrance to Lower Alilitsa, across Tresonechka River

The Lower Alilitsa is longer than the Upper. The oval-shape entrance into the Lower Alilitsa cave is located under a steep limestone rock in the level of Tresonechka River, on the altitude of about 1,450 meters a.s.l. At the very entrance lies fine fluvial material, sand and gravel, deposited by Tresonechka River, which sometimes makes the access into the cave impossible.

Lower Alilitsa 1

Lower Alilitsa is featured by an underground water flow which is present along its entire length, with the exception of the beginning of the channel, while the Upper Alilitsa is a dry cave. Lower Alilitsa features by large block of stones fallen from the ceiling, so at the bottom of the channel various accumulative forms appear, while at the ceiling erosion forms as spiers, arches and more can be seen. Upper Alilitsa is characterized by accumulative forms: tubs and cascades arranged next to each other. The largest has dimensions 3x2 m, and the height is 40 cm. Both Alilitsa caves contain deposited river gravel, which is carbonized on the surface and its thickness, especially in the lower channel, is 3 meters. This points on existence of cave accumulative terrace and on underground river flow in Upper Alilitsa. In Lower Alilitsa the regressive erosion has carried away significant portion of the gravel. This indicates increased mechanical erosion and corrosion, performed mostly by the underground river flow and dripping water. On the other hand, these accumulative terraces show that in Upper Alilitsa stronger underground watercourse once existed too.

Lower Alilitsa 2

Drainage of the Massif Bistra in this section is carried out through the surface water flows of Tresonechka River and underground through the underground flow of Lower Alilitsa. The underground water flow in Alilitsa dive at a certain point. Since there appear to be more streams at the level of Tresonechka River, speleologists repeatedly have undertaken dyeing of the underground water. The aim was to establish where moves the water from the underground flow, i.e. to establish underground connections. Dyeing of the water is performed with fluorescein in the cave. Speleologists assumed that fluorescein would appear in a karstic water spring located about 500 meters downstream from the entrance of the cave. However, the color in this source does not appear, but after three days colored waters appeared in Tresonechka river from some other unknown sources. It was concluded that this a matter of alternately placed permeable and impermeable rocks, indicating large layers of gravel in the upper cave channel, which means that there exist independent underground streams and crevices in the kras and in the massif.

How to get there

You can reach Tresonche village from the city of Struga or from Mavrovi Anovi village (at Mavrovo Lake). At the R1 (Boshkov most, Boshko’s bridge) you go south-east and at R2 turn toward east and continue some 8 km. The asphalt road leads you to Tresonche (and to other Miyak villages, Rosoki and Selce). To this village also lead well preserved and maintained mount bike and walking trails, connecting it to other villages, like Lazaropole etc.

If you travel by car, you have to park your car somewhere in the village. It will take about 1-1.5 hour to get there. Your hunt on this cache will start at the point "1 Alilitsa Start" where is the info table. The trial is poorly marked, therefore you can use several points (1-15; see the waypoints and the map), to be sure not to get lost. In the beginning the dirt road is wide, however as you get closer to the caves the path becomes quite narrow.

About the path: READ VERY CAREFULLY!!!!!

To enter in the caves you should pass Tresonechka river that is flowing right in front of the entrance of Lower Alilitsa. The speleologists and the common visitors have already made a small improvised bridge of lean woods, however sometimes the river destroys it. Be very careful when you cross the river (about 3-5 m wide), the stones are very slippery.

The entrance into the Lower Alilitsa cave is tight and you get in it on your knees. But only after ten steps, in front of you will open a huge cave gallery, filled up with beautiful decorations. One of the slippery paths will lead you to the beautiful cave lake, and the another one to the waterfalls.

If you enter in the cave for the first time and without a speleologist or someone who has been there before, you should be very careful and remember the way back to the entrance. Of course you would need a flashlight. The cave is huge and you can freely move upstanding. At some places it is straitening but you can still pass those several meters on your knees.

The Upper Alilitsa lies almost straight above the Lower Alilitsa. The Lower and the Upper Alilitsa are around 100 m distant one from another. The slope at which you have to climb is VERY steep, the climbing could be dangerous because the slope is covered with stones that are wobbly unstable under your feet. It is necessary to use good sticks or rods to climb the hill.

About the cache

The cache is a small plastic container, no pen in it, so bring one with you.

The cache is hidden at the beginning of the Upper Alilica. The cache is a white plastic tube, containing a log book.

NOTE; PLEASE!!!!! Since the cache is really difficult to find (steep and rocky terrain, poor GPS signal) the owner suggests to the geocachers to enter only the Lower Alilitsa cave! Take a photo of you at the entrance of the Lower Alilitsa to prove your visit and you can log as FOUND!
