Geocache Description:

Thank you to the Village of Riverton for allowing me to place this cache.

The waters of the Icelandic River are definitely trouble!

The previous four pedestrian bridges that were here, dating back 120 years, were all wiped out by floods. They were built in 1892, 1910, 1932 and 1974, with the last one knocked out by flood and ice floes in 2011.

The 2011 flood knocked out two of the four bridge piers. During the rebuilding, Stantec engineers took out a third pier to remove another target for ice floes. Engineers just kept a single centre pier but braced it with four anchors, burrowed 21 metres into bedrock, on each side.

Stantec said the pier will withstand river ice one metre thick. Stantec also bevelled the pier into a point so it can either split ice floes or at least deflect them away.

So now the fifth bridge spanning 90-metres across the Icelandic River, built in 2012 will be put through the test!

Riverton is a town of 560 people that was originally settled by Icelandic pioneers. While in Riverton, be sure to check out various sites such as the bronze statue of Sigtryggur Jónasson, (known as the Father of New Iceland); weather permitting, you can have an outdoor lunch near Lundi the Riverton moose; or maybe stop at the Riverton CPR Station which was once considered to be “the end of the rail line” for freight and goods heading to northern communities.
