Geocache Description:

These Norfolk Island Pines were probably planted by Edwin Roberts close to his farm homestead in 1858.  The Anglican missionary Bishop G.A Selwyn brought a ship load of small Norfolk pines to Auckland in 1858 for a charity auction to assist the near and destitute Norfolk Islanders who had come from Pitcairn Island after the British closed the penal colony.  Norfolk Island pines were unique new trees for the settlers at that time and the cross on top was aide to indicate Christian Hospitality. Many of those 1858 Norfolk pines still grow in the Auckland region.

Nearby is the Hyde Park Farm Homestead which was built in the late 1850’s for Edwin and Selena Roberts. Although it is privately owned, it is a heritage building.  This area was subdivided for residential use in 1976.

The Pakuranga Cricket Club started playing here on the farm’s flattish land in the 1880’s before moving to a levelled and filled pitch at Pigeon Mountain.

Across the road, Waka-Aranga School uses the three Norfolk pines as part of their school logo.

As a school is across the road, the area is a very high muggle zone at certain times of the day.

Cache is a magnetic nano containing a log book (no room for trades or swaps). BYOP. Please ensure you put it back where you found it.

If you don't have a pen to sign the log take a photo of the logbook, otherwise you risk your log being deleted.
