This cache is a replacement for the original cache called "Abbazia di Santa Maria a Cerrate" by Caterpila that has gone missing and was not always easy to find due to a nosy caretaker and limited opening hours. This new cache is in a slightly different spot and will hopefully live longer.
The cache is a lunchbox size container with a logbook and some small items. To find the cache, you'll not need to access the abbey, but you can park on the parking area in front of the abbey, from which you reach it in a few minutes via a dirt road. After about 50 meters, you'll see a building make from rocks just on the other side of the wall. You can pass the wall at the lowest part and have a look at the building. After that, turn to the wall closest to the structure to find the cache.

Questo cache è la sostituzione del cache "Abbazia di Santa Maria a Cerrate" di Caterpila, che è andato perso e che non è stato sempre ritrovabile dovuto ad un custode curioso e ad un orario di apertura limitato. Questo nuovo cache si trova in un posto diverso dall'originale e spero duri di più.
Il cache è un contenitore di plastica con piccoli oggetti dentro ed il logbook. Per trovarlo non è necessario entrare nell'abbazia, però potete parcheggiare nel parcheggio davanti all'abbazia e da qui arrivate al cache in pochi minuti tramite una strada sterrata. Dopo circa 50 metri vedrete dall'altra parte del muro un edificio fatto di rocce.Passate il muro nella parte più bassa e guardate l'edificio. Poi giratevi verso il muro più vicino all'edificio e cercate il cache.

Legend has it that the Abbey of Santa Maria di Cerrate in Lecce was founded by King Tancred of Hauteville, to whom the Virgin appeared after he had chased a doe into a cave. The Abbey dates from the 12th century: in that period, it played host to a group of Basilian monks. Over time, it became one of the most important religious centres in southern Italy. In 1531, the complex came under the control of the Ospedale degli Incurabili di Napoli (Hospital of the Incurables of Naples): alongside the Church, the complex encompassed cowsheds, a well, a mill and two olive presses.
In 1711, the Abbey was raided by Turkish pirates; it then fell into a state of complete dereliction until the Province of Lecce entrusted its restoration to architect Franco Minissi in 1965. This restoration gave rise to the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions of the Salento Area. In 2012, the Province issued a public contract that led to the Abbey being given over to FAI - Fondo Ambiente Italiano (the Italian National Trust) on a thirty-year concession.
The Abbey is one of the most significant examples of Romanesque architecture in Puglia. The portal is surmounted by an arch with high reliefs of exceptional quality, which reproduce scenes from the New Testament and also depict a praying monk. The Abbey was not only a religious centre but also a productive hub: out of the close links between the Abbey and the surrounding countryside so rich in olive groves, fruit trees and crops, there arose a great deal of agricultural activity, and today we can see the remains of two ancient underground olive oil mills and wells for collecting the oil. Leggenda dice che l'Abbazia di Santa Maria di Cerrate in Lecce è stata fondata dal re Tancredi d'Altavilla, a cui apparve la Vergine quando era alla caccia di una femmina di daino. L'abbazia è datata dal secolo 12: in quel periodo era rifugio per un gruppo di monaci basiliani. Nel tempo è diventata uno dei centri religiosi più importanti del sud Italia. Nel 1531 fa parte dell'Ospedale degli Incurabili di Napoli: a parte la chiesa, il complesso comprendeva stalle di mucche, un pozzo, un mulino e due presse d'oliva.
Nel 1711, l'Abbazia fu saccheggiata dai pirati turchi; poi è caduta in uno stato di totale degrado fino quando la Provincia di Lecce affidò la sua restaurazione all'architetto Franco Minissi nel 1965. Questo restauro ha dato origine al Museo delle Arti Popolari e delle Tradizioni del Salento. Nel 2012 la Provincia ha rilasciato un contratto pubblico che ha portato l'abbazia ad essere consegnata alla FAI - Fondo Ambiente Italiano con una concessione di 30 anni.
L'abbazia è uno degli esempi più significativi di architettura romanica in Puglia. Il portale è sormontato da un arco con alti rilievi di qualità eccezionale che riproducono scene del Nuovo Testamento e raffigurano anche un monaco in preghiera. L'Abbazia non era solo un centro religioso, ma anche un centro produttivo: c'erano strette relazioni tra l'Abbazia e la campagna circostante così ricca di uliveti, alberi da frutto e colture, sorse una grande attività agricola che ancora oggi si possono vedere i resti di due antichi mulini sotterranei di olio d'oliva e pozzi per la raccolta dell'olio.
