Geocache Description:

This easy to find cache is in the Millennium Wood in Colby.

After the previous cache here (Colby Millenium Wood GC1VMFW) was archived in Oct 2012 I thought it a good idea to put a new one in, although in a slightly different place.
You are looking for a small sized container. An experienced eye should spot this quickly!

Parking is available nearby on the road by St Cairbre’s Church.

The land where the wood is planted was originally purchased by a Miss Briscoe who provided it to the Arbory Commissioners for the building of a Parish Hall. Shortly after this however a hall in Ballabeg was transferred out of a trust to the Commissioners. The Commissioners concentrated on renovating the hall in Ballabeg which has become the Parish Hall and is ideally placed near Arbory Parish Church.

Colby did not lose out however and a Sunday School hall was built next to Colby Chapel by Colby Bridge. It was always intended that this hall be used by the community and as well as church use it is currently used by dancers, singers, bowlers, actors and a Pilates group throughout the week.

But what of Miss Briscoe’s gift?  Over the decades the small plot was leased out – I remember sheep grazing on it – but proposals for its use continued. Two of these included the creation of a bowling green and the building of a scout hut, for which funds were raised.Nothing was progressed however until the late 1990’s when the Commissioners decided that the site should be utilised by the community and the idea of creating a wood for the Millennium was formed.

Twelve years on the wood is well established and is a lovely little quiet place to visit. In spring you will be able to see the Blue Bells planted by the Arbory Guides and all year round you can sit on the bench donated by Arbory WI to commemorate their Golden anniversary.
Why not have a visit (or revisit!) and bring a picnic.
Congratulations to The Lady Hazel and Mike FTF - happy growing!
