The Guidestone Milestone is a traditional but well hidden cache that can be found without needing to move any stones in the guidestone or surrounding wall. Take care as near a busy junction.
This is a wonderful example of a Guidestone also known as a direction stone. Unlike a "proper" milestone it does not show any distances. It dates from the later part of the 19th century and is made of ashlar (faced) stone.
The nearby Lanhill Farm whose tower you can see to the North, was built in c 1845 as an estate farmhouse by Joseph Neeld who inherited a fortune in 1828. Neeld was MP for Chippenham from 1830 to 1856 (although he never made a speech). He lived at Grittleton Manor which he also had built. A benefactor to the area he donated c£12,000 for the building of Chippenham town hall. The location, date, quality of the stone, and the reference to Grittleton on the stone suggests a link to Neeld, but this is not proven.
Please replace the cache carefully as found.
There is lots of interesting and useful information about milestones to be found on the Milestone Society website.
