Di remota origine, risulta citata in un documento del 1081 in cui risulta essere donata al monastero di Cluny, insieme a dei terreni. Anticamente era dedicata, oltre a Santa Maria, anche ai santi Michele e Pietro. Viene eretta a parrocchia, staccandosi dalla Pieve di Leggiuno, forse già tra il XII e il XIII secolo, comunque entro il XV secolo. In seguito al trasferimento del titolo parrocchiale, nel XVII secolo, alla più centrale chiesa di San Giacomo, essa venne progressivamente abbandonata. Ricostruita completamente nel 1756 su disegno dell'architetto Gioacchino Besozzi, fu affiancata nell'Ottocento dal cimitero comunale. Sulla facciata, ai lati dell'ingresso, ci sono due lunette affrescate: quella di destra risale al Seicento e raffigura San Giovanni Evangelista; quella di sinistra, rappresentante la Vergine, è di stile tre-quattrocentesco e verosimilmente potrebbe appartenere all'antica chiesa romanica. L'interno, a navata unica, si distingue per la bellezza e la raffinatezza delle decorazioni. L'altare maggiore conserva la statua dell'Assunta, alla quale la chiesa è dedicata; gli altari laterali sono dedicati rispettivamente a San Giovanni Battista e al Santissimo Crocifisso. Sul sagrato antistante la chiesa sono poste le edicole della Via Crucis che ospita formelle in ceramica dell'artista Oreste Quattrini (1990).

Is erected to parish, breaking away from Pieve di Leggiuno, perhaps already between the 12th and 13th centuries, but by the 15th century. As a result of the transfer of parish title, in the 17th century, to the most central Church of St. James, it was gradually abandoned. Completely rebuilt in 1756 by the architect Gioacchino Besozzi, was flanked in the nineteenth century by the municipal cemetery. On the front, on the sides of the entrance, there are two frescoed lunettes: the right dates back to the 17th century and depicts St. John the Evangelist; the left, representing the Virgin, is of three-fifteenth-century style and likely could belong to the ancient Romanesque church. The Interior, with a single nave, is distinguished by the beauty and refinement of decorations. The high altar has a statue of the Assumption, to whom the Church is dedicated. the side altars are dedicated respectively to St. John the Baptist and the Holy crucifix. On the Parvis in front of the Church are located the aedicules of the Via Crucis that includes ceramic tiles by the artist Oreste Quattrini (1990).
