Geocache Description:

There is no cache at the listed co-ordinates!

We have decided to add another international geocache to our list. This one is based on a possible architectural connection between Port Elizabeth South Africa and Bexhill UK.

Along our promenade in Port Elizabeth we have an interesting piece of architecture commonly known as the “Tin Hat”. Bexhill in the UK has two “Tin Hats” which are almost identical in design.

The Tin Hat on our beachfront has got nothing to do with the Moth, isn't a memorial neither does it have any military significance. The Governor General of the Cape (Prince Arthur of Connaught as well as Princess Arthur) paid a short farewell visit to Port Elizabeth in 1923.  On this occasion Prince Arthur opened the Campanile and laid the foundation stone of the First Scouts Hall in North End.  Princess Arthur opened the "Princess Promenade" in Humewood which was built in sections over several years.  The official opening took place under the Promenade Dome, designed by the Assistant City Engineer JJ Burt, on 6 November 1923.  The Promenade Dome is commonly known as "The Tin Hat" from its resemblance to a First Word War helmet, but couldn't have had any connection to the Moth order as it was only founded in 1927.  A bronze plate was affixed to commemorate the occasion, but this has been long gone of course.

We have placed a cache container in Port Elizabeth in the proximity of our Tin Hat. The co-ordinates for our cache container are neatly placed in the cache container GC461V8 in Bexhill in the proximity of our Tin Hat’s twin sisters.

How you retrieve the Port Elizabeth cache co-ordinates from GC461V8 is up to you provided you play by the rules.

The Rules:
1.      You may not ask the cache owners for assistance.
2.      You can only log a find on this cache page if you have physically found this cache in Port Elizabeth.
3.    Geocachers in Bexhill may not log a find on this cache page but are encouraged to post a note to say that they have assisted you in retrieving the co-ordinates from the Bexhill cache.
4.      As a courtesy to the Bexhill cachers, I would encourage you not to contact a Bexhill cacher who has already assisted in supplying coordinates to a Port Elizabeth cacher.
5.      Geocachers in Port Elizabeth must post a note on this page stating who has assisted them from Bexhill as soon as possible to prevent any confusion.

If you have any additional info or history on our tin hat, please feel free to add it to you log.

Please replace the container exactly as found.

Thanks to bhanacharaid and FireflyAfrica for their assistance.

Hope you enjoy the journey!!
