Detroit Cinema History:
The Flamingo Theatre
Detroit, Michigan
OPEN: 1925 | CLOSED: 1952 | SEATS: 997

Artists Image from an Ad for the Flamingo as "Flamingo Hall"

The Flamingo opened in 1925, seating nearly 1000 and was an "old neighborhood movie house" that many folks from the 7 mile and Gratiot area would visit for their weekly and daily fill of the movies of the day.

A Marr & Colton theater organ had been installed in the Flamingo Theater in 1925 and later removed when the Theatre closed.

As a neighborhood movie house, speaker and conservative lobbyist Donald Lobsinger had visited and addressed a political gathering here.  It had a pretty good run as a Theatre, going 27 years strong before finally going dark in 1952.

Years later, it was turned into a ballroom / rental hall and the name from the theatre would partially remain as the facility would be known as "Flamingo Hall".

"Cleaned-up" Ad from when the Flamingo was a Rental Hall.

From that point on, the name changed to "Flamingo Hall" and would be available for high school reunions, wedding receptions and other parties.  At least one high school (Bishop Gallagher-class of 1977) had an "after show" party there the year they performed the stage-show Fiddler on the Roof (1974).

Bookings would slow down and eventually the building would no longer be viable to remain open even as a Rental Hall and it was closed.

In the mid-to-late 1980's, a Church would purchase the property and remodel the building to what is seen along 7 mile road today as a Church and place of spiritual communion.

It's hard to say what remains of anything theatre-wise on the inside, but i'm sure the memories of those who went to the Flamingo Theatre and Flamingo Hall will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

The cache itself is across from the old theatre building on PUBLIC property.

You should be able to see the building much

better from the cache location as well.

PLEASE RE-HIDE the cache the same or BETTER than you found it.

Thanks! :)

IF you have any more information or details on this theatre,
please email me and i will include it in the description.

Thank you.
