Geocache Description:

Higashi-Murayama Purification Plant

The Higashi-Murayama Water Purification Plant is a water facility located in Higashi-Murayama, Tokyo.

Service Area: Shinjuku-ku, Bunkyo-ku, Shibuya-ku, Nerima-ku, Parts of Suginami-ku, Nakano-ku, Toshima-ku, Kyose City, Higashi Kurume City, Nishi Tokyo City, Kokubunji City, Koganei City, Kunitachi City, Fuchu City, Chofu City, Komae City, Nino City, Tama City, Inagi City, Mitaka City, Higashi Murayama City, Kodaira City, Tachikawa City, most of Machida City and easter parts of Hachioji City

Overview

Water began passing through the purification plant on August 16, 1960. Source water is introduced into the system from the Tama River and Tone River. The facility was constructed as part of the second water supply expansion project known as the "Tokyo Big Four water purification plant," (Kanamachi  Asaka,Tamagawa and Higashi-Murayama Water Purification Plants).  Located on Sayamakyuuryou just 1 km from Higashi-Murayama Station of the Seibu Shinjuku and Seibu Kokubunji lines the Higashi-Murayama facility commands a view of the northwestern part of the Murayama Chosuichi (Lake Tamako).

The Asaka Water Treatment plant and the Higashi-Murayama Treatment Plants are connected to the Tone River. Untreated water flows to each treatment facility in order. The system is flexible enough to reverse flow to send water from the Tama River to the Asaka Treatment Plant. As the plant is located at a higher altitude than the service area the natural flow of water can be used as a backup facility to send water to a large area even in the event of a power outage or large regional earthquake disaster.

The facility was the first site developed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Goverment Bureau of Waterworks for the cogeneration of electricity in conjunction with solar, hydro and wind power. However, the wind turbine that is on site is old and undersized and has not produced a significant amount of electricity.

In February 2001, the facility achieved ISO14001 certification. The official name of government department responsible for overseeing the facility is "The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Bureau of Clean Water Management Higashimurayama Office". The office oversees the the Kosaku Water Treatment Plant, the Sakai Water Treatment Plant, the Tamagawa Water Treatment Plant, the Nagasawa Water Treatment Plant and the Kinuta Water Treatment Plant.and the Yamaguchi  Chosuichi (Lake Sayama).

The cache is micro size and is accessible from the Lake Tamako Cycling Path. Please bring your own pen.

BYOP.
