Weyapiersenwah
aka Chief Blue Jacket

(1743–1810)

Shawnee War Chief
Once believed to have been a white man who was adopted as a boy into a Shawnee family. However, this story surfaced many years after his death and no contemporary of Blue Jacket described him as white. The theory was finally disproven in the 20th century via DNA tests of known descendants of Blue Jacket and the white man he was reported to be. He and Miami Chief Little Turtle led the pan-Indian victory at what would become known as St. Clair's Defeat in 1791. Some historians have called it the worst US military defeat ever since it left the United States with a total regular army of about 300. He eventually signed the 1795 Treaty of Greenville that gave the US most of the modern state of Ohio. Died of natural causes near Detroit MI.
