Famous Shawnee Leaders of Ohio Series

A series of 7 caches hidden along the paved Millcreek-Greenway Trail. They honor notable Shawnee leaders that were active in the Ohio Valley region. The trail runs along the Mill Creek that the Shawnee called "Maketewah" which meant “it is black” due to the the dark rich soil that made up the bed of the creek which was once was rich in wildlife.

(1768–1813)


Shawnee born Confederacy Chief of multiple Native American tribes in the early 1800s.

One of the most well known and studied Eastern Native American leaders. Destined to be a leader. The panther was used as the totem for his Kispoko Shawnee band he belonged to. Many Indians were named for events that occurred around the time of their birth. His name means "Panther Across the Sky" because around the hours he was born a comet streaked across the sky. Refused to sign the 1795 Treaty of Greenville and led a Confederacy of Indian Tribes against further American encroachment. Allied with the British, he defeated Americans at the 1812 Siege of Detroit. Died in Ontario Canada fighting alongside the British against the Americans at the 1813 Battle of the Thames. Tecumseh is honored in Canada as a hero who played a major role in Canada's successful repulsion of an American invasion in the War of 1812.
