This cache has been archived.

Skookum Bear: As the cache owner has not indicated that they have visited the cache location to replace it if it was missing, perform needed maintenance, or verify that it is still there within a reasonable amount of time, I am regretfully archiving the cache to clear it from the active cache database and open the area to new caching opportunities. If the cache owner would like to replace a cache at this location, please submit a new geocache listing and it will be reviewed under the current Geocaching guidelines.

Geocache Description:

This is the first in a series of caches that will take you along what used to be the old highway 97. It’s now down to one lane and beginning to grow in with trees and brush. Most of the road is the original asphalt but in some places rock has covered the road. It is still drivable but I would encourage you to take a stroll and enjoy the wonderful views of Kalamalka Lake below and the valleys to the south and east. The roadway is pretty flat, however there are steep drop offs to the lake side of the road and no barricades are in place. If approaching from the south the obscured exit (gap in the concrete barriers) is approx. 500 meters before the Predator Ridge turn. If approaching from the north I recommend continuing south past the cache access (left hand turn crossing oncoming traffic) to the Crystal Waters exit (turn lane off the highway provided) and then doubling back to get off the highway safely with a right turn. As with most rocky areas in the warm Okanagan there can be the presence of rattlesnakes once the spring air warms the rocks and they wake from their winner nap. There is a well-known rattlesnake reserve within a kilometer of the area so assume that they may also live in the area of the caches. With that in mind I’ve located the caches near the road itself and no need to wander too far from it. Be aware of where you travel, even on the road and carry a big stick. This is perfect wood tick ground as well. They thrive in the grasses and small shrubs throughout the Okanagan Valley and one should be diligent about checking for ticks on their person after being in the great outdoors. For more info on the wood tick check out the internet. Most of the caches have room for a few small trade items so for those big trade deals don’t forget to seek and find the nearby “The old highway trinket trade, GC358TX”
