Historic Arbor Day in Greytown
On 3rd July 1890 New Zealand's first arbor day was held in Greytown. A Mr W C Nation had convinced the local council to hold an arbour day and on 3 July 150 trees were planted along the road side from Greytown to Featherston. To day a only few of these trees survive and can be found on the outskirts to Greytown. It was a great day for the town with a band, a procession, all the school children and pakeha and Maori from Papawai pa all attended. Over the years many trees have been planted in Greytown, most being exotic species. A brochure offering several walks round Greytown's historic trees is avaliable from the local information center.
The cache is located at one end of Hospital Street. This street is lined on both sides with many fine old specimens of Quercus palustris ( Pin Oak ) and Quercus borealis ( American red oaks)
The cache is embeded in Podocarpus totara. Please bring your own pen or pencil
