Geocache Description:

The second in a series of small caches to highlight the Crystal Brook school community.

This is the second of several caches to highlight the history of Crystal Brook School. It is a very small cache with a roll of paper for recording. You will need your own pencil or pen. No need to go over the fence on to school grounds.

Here are some of the surnames and occupations of families of children in that first class of Crystal Brook North School, 1877: Sinclair (Cattle dealer), Hewett (Butcher), Gilbert (Brickmaker), Davis (Labourer), Forgan (Iron founder), Flavel (Farmer), Hamlyn (Farmer), Pavy (Farmer), Hall (Brickmaker) and Cox (Farmer).

When the Rocky River school was closed in 1921 the students were sent to Crystal Brook. Enrolments steadily increased to a peak of 280 in 1925...which necessitated  the erection of another stone room in 1923. A student at the school at that time, Mr. Roy Robert, relates: I remember playing under the old pepper trees and watching the men mixing the lime mortar for the new room that was Mr. Goldsworthy's (Headteacher, 1922-24) pride and joy. I can still see that little smile of his under the small moustache as he ceremonially deposits a bottle in a hollow brick in the partially completed western wall of that room, and as he envisages aloud its being discovered at some time in the 21st century. Papers in that bottle bear the names of the children in the school.
