Bristol, the Mum City, was first settled as part of Farmington around 1727. It was originally called New Cambridge. Bristol was known for its clock manufacturing beginning in the 1700s and continuing into the 20 th century. Other important products manufactured in Bristol included bells, coaster brakes, and ball bearings. It received its nickname because of the large amount of Chrysanthemums that were grown here up until the 1980s. Each fall the city celebrates the Mum Festival with fairs, a parade, a road race, and other events. Presently the largest employer is ESPN which is headquartered on the south side of town and broadcasts around the world. The country’s oldest continually running amusement park, Lake Compounce, is located here.
