Bridge Series: Midtown Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Stonagal: Picked this one up today. Go figure I noticed a plaque I hadn't on two visits before! It's kind of incredible to me that this one never went missing. Not that I'm complaining! Thanks to all who found this one.

Geocache Description:

PLEASE EXERCISE A HIGH LEVEL OF STEALTH.  CACHE PLACEMENT IS NOT DIFFICULT. BYOP.

The Midtown Bridge provides an important link between south Winnipeg and the Downtown.  It is so named because it brings northbound traffic into “Midtown” Winnipeg – the area loosely defined as that between the Assiniboine River and Broadway, and between Osborne and Main Streets.  It was first built in 1954, and underwent significant rehabilitation 30 years later, which included the development of a twinned span.

The bridge carries Donald Street over the Assiniboine River.  In the Midtown area, northbound traffic travels on Smith Street, while southbound traffic remains Donald.  Both streets are named for Donald Alexander Smith (aka Lord Strathcona), a Hudson’s Bay Company chief commissioner and politician.

The Midtown Bridge is an unofficial extension of the “Pine to Palm Highway” – a continuous stretch of roadway between Winnipeg, Manitoba and New Orleans, Louisiana.  The highway officially ends on Pembina Highway, with a stone demarcation at its intersection with Stafford Street.  Nevertheless, northbound Pembina Highway continues to “Confusion Corner” before continuing further as Donald Street, leading to the Midtown Bridge and beyond.

Congratulations to Wagonmaker for the second of two FTFs in the series!
