Geocache Description:

2" tube with magnet. The cache overlooks what remains of the Wantsum Channel.

Reculver Towers are on the site of the Regulbium Roman Fort.
After the Romans left a Monastery was founded on the site in 669 and the church of St Mary was built near the centre of the earlier fort.
The monastery ceased to function in the 10th century  and the church became the parish church of Reculver, the towers were added in the 12th century.
The church was partly demolished in 1805 with most of the stone being used to build a new church at Hillborough.
The towers were left as a landmark for ships and restored by Trinity House in 1809.
The area between Reculver & Minnis Bay was once covered by the Wantsum Channel when the Isle of Thanet really was an Island. 2000 years ago the channel was up to 2 miles wide but by the 8th century it was reported to be 3 furlongs [660 yards] wide. Up to the 15th century ships could still sail into Canterbury but the channel closed as it silted up.
