Malangan är en högtidsrit med träfigurer som tillämpas i Nya Irland och närbelägna öar i Papua NyaGuinea.
Malanganceremonin
Till en malanganceremoni för en död person tillverkas en malanganfigur till minne. Den noggrant utskurna skulpturen, eller dansmasken, ska i stiliserad form avspegla den dödes personlighet. När den var färdig visades den upp, respektive användes, vid ett tillfälle och förstördes sedan. Malanganceremonier har överlevt på Nya Irland till nutid; figurerna säljs numera till utomstående snarare än att förstöras.
Skulptören Lenny Clarhäll har inspirerats av malanganskulpturer i flera konstverk, bland annat denna, Malanganer på Konst på Hög i Kumla och Malangan i Marievik i Stockholm.

Malagan ceremonies
Malagan ceremonies are the most large-scale and famous of the many events that take place within the malagan culture. They take place irregularly, and are typically large and complex events, taking several days, and requiring months or years of preparation.
While a malagan ceremony is always held in the name of one or more people who have died in recent years, it is not at all merely a mortuary rite. Many other interactions take place within the overall event, including announcements, repayment of debts, recognition of obligations, resolution of disputes, and many other customary activities.
The artist Lenny Clarhäll has been inspired by Malangan figures in several art works such as this one, Malanganer on "Konst på Hög" (Art on Heap) i Kumla and Malangan in Marievik,i Stockholm.
