Roys Hill was named after a Wellington based roading engineer who amongst other things was responsible for planning the first roadway from Hasting to Waipukarau. For many years this particular area was used as a landfill site prior to the establishment of the transfer facility on Omarunui Road. A 'hard cap' was established after normal dumping ceased which eventually lead to the prospect of new plantings to develop the reserve.
Atop the hill is an open grassed area, ideal for family games. Model Flying Hawkes Bay use this site from time to time. Immediately adjacent to the reserve is Hawkes Bay Kart Club where the thrills and spills can normally be witnessed the last Sunday of the month. To the north-east is the commercial side of Craggy Range Winery, the largest in the region in the foreground you may spot the now disused Roys Hill Rifel Range. In the other direction are many smaller, sometimes boutique wineries including those that form the Bridge Pa Triangle.
