This area of Colorado has a rich heritage in Native American presence. Those tribes most noted in Fremont County were the Utes however, the Cheyenne and Arapaho, the Kiowa and Comanche moved in and out following buffalo herds. The tribes also took advantage of the various features of the territory such as the hot springs, mild weather, abundant wildlife and excellent vantage points for surveying the vast plains to the east.
Many of the tribes passed through the area into South Park, moving along waterways such as Grape Creek and Fourmile Creek or following the Arkansas. Artifacts, pictographs and some structural sites point to native camp sites and burial grounds. Prior to the late 1700's, the Utes were the predominant tribe of the area. They were largely impoverished and forced to remain in or near the mountains by the more forceful plains tribes. Forays to capture buffalo often brought the Cheyenne and Arapaho into the mountains. Tribes traded scalping raids but clear tribal boundaries were rare.
The Utes were not as tall in stature as other tribes but they were a hardy, vigorous race with high cheekbones and deep copperskin. Known as "Mountain People", they were respected and feared by surrounding tribes. Their language is from the same language family as the Aztecs. Deeply spiritual they depended upon, and gave continual thanks to the Great Spirit. They had no word signifying rich or poor, or having much or little property. They did have vocabulary that denotated rich or poor in friends.
