HAMMOND HILL-ton Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

IthacaDoodle: Skied by today on the cache's one-year anniversary and picked it up. No love (favorite points) for an well-stocked ammo can at an interesting spot in the woods means it is time to think of something else.

Geocache Description:

An ammo can at the XC Warming Hut at Hammond Hill State Forest.

Hammond Hill State Forest encompasses 3,618 acres previously cleared of trees for agriculture during the mid to late nineteenth century. Between 1935 and 1940, 708,000 pine, spruce, large, sugar maple, white ash, and red oak were planted by members of the Civilian Conservation Corps. The 19-mile Hammond Hill State Forest Multiple Use Trail System is designed to offer family-based recreation for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing.

My favorite time to visit Hammond Hill is in the winter for cross-country skiing. After enjoying some winter caching in the Adirondacks recently, I was inspired to add more winter-friendly caches near where I had my first winter caching experience (a DNF at Mother's Day on Hammond Hill).

This ammo can is hidden at the warming hut used for special events and races. Even if there is nobody here to offer you a hot chocolate or a place by the fire, you should still be able to find some nicer swag and trackables. The Hammond Hill-ton is quite close to parking and to the trailhead (be sure to sign the trail register too to show the DEC that these trails are used and appreciated!) and you can easily reach the cache without skis in winter. If you do venture further in the winter on the 19-miles of trails, please be sure to observe the rules, especially: Do not hike or bike in the ski tracks!
