Burlington Public Art - “A Space Composition For Rebecca” Have you ever wondered what this is? The following article comes from the publication: "Inside Halton" published April 6, 2008 Written by Dennis Smith Prolific artist Haydn Llewellyn Davies is probably best remembered in Burlington for his orange aluminum sculpture 'Rebecca', a fixture on Lakeshore Road since 1978. The former advertising executive changed careers late in life and became a highly-regarded sculptor, who died in Toronto (March 24, 2008) at age 86. His large sculpture entitled A Space Composition For Rebecca has stood on the south side of BAC ever since it opened. "It was very well received by the arts community," said George Wale. "It was a significant piece at the time and still is." "It causes some people to go 'What is that?' " said Wale. "Others like it and appreciate it." Davies explained the art: "It is an exploration of the interplay between mass and void ... of defining space," said the artist. "It's both a very simple idea and a complex one." The handout notes that Davies visited the proposed BAC site on a dull February morning and decided his piece would be bright orange to combat the prevailing dreariness of the scene. Davies was born in Wales and was inspired by the country's tradition and landscape. He immigrated to Canada in 1929 and graduated from the Ontario College of Art, University of Toronto (Fine Arts) and the Ontario School of Business. His works are displayed in public and private collections across North America and Europe. What do you think? Are you a fan of the sculpture, or not?
