Geocache Description:

Mega 2013 - Night Time Hunting for Hobbits

Where:
Oak Tree Pub
Rosehill Roundabout,
Rednal,
Birmingham
B45 8UX
When:
Thursday 1st August

8.30pm until Midnight

Join the 2013 Mega Committee in the Oak Tree pub (at the foot of the Lickey Hills) for a fun filled night of hunting for hobbits! You will be able to sign the logbook here and join in with the general geo-chatting. For those more adventurous of you, why not explore the hills by torchlight to see if you can spot an elusive hobbit?!

The pub is open until 11pm and serves food until 10pm. They are also quite happy for us to use their car park after the pub has closed. For those of you wishing to explore the Lickeys during daylight hours, there are plenty of caches to keep you busy, including a Wherigo, traditionals and cryptic puzzle caches. We will be adding a new night cache to these, especially to coincide with the event.

The Lickey Hills Country Park is one of the oldest parks managed by Birmingham. In 1904, J.R.R Tolkien of 'The Hobbit' fame, moved to Rednal, and the hills became a favourite haunt of his. They are the inspiration for the mythical Shires, where the hobbits lived in his book.

For many Birmingham and Black Country people, the Lickey Hills were a traditional day out, when trams would take the crowds from the inner city to Rednal. Stories tell of queues as far back as the golf course on busy Sundays as people waited for the trams to take them home. The Lickey Hills were designated a Country Park in 1971 and the Visitor Centre was completed in 1990. The park now welcomes over 500,000 visitors a year and remains one of the most picturesque locations in the Midlands.
