Geocache Description:

The Memorial Tomb of Alexander I of Battenberg is located at Vasil Levski Boulevard 81 in city of Sofia. This is the mausoleum and final resting place of Prince Alexander Joseph von Batenberg (1857-1893) , the first Head of State of modern Bulgaria.

He was elected on April 17, 1879 by the First Grand National Assembly.
His election highlighted his contribution and participation in the Russian-Turkish war. (Alexander crossed the Danube on a pontoon with 13 Infantry Battalion, then Stara Planina famous 9th Cavalry Regiment of General Joseph Gurko).
Prince led the movement for the erection of state sovereignty and proclaimed the Unification - Eastern Rumelia with the Principality of Bulgaria.
Battenberg was Commander of the Bulgarian Army in Serbo-Bulgarian War of 1885.
Under influence of the Russian Emperor Alexander III and Otto von Bismarck, the prince was forced to abdicate in 1886.
When Alexander died in exile in Graz, Austria in 1893, he was initially buried there. However, in accordance with his wish, his remains were transferred to the Bulgarian capital. Following a service in the St Nedelya Church his body was moved to the Church of St George and subsequently to the newly constructed mausoleum in the centre of the city.
Commissioned to the Swiss architect Hermann Mayer, designed in the eclectic style (with prominent elements of neo-baroque and neoclassicism and opened in 1897, the mausoleum measures 11 metres in height and 80 square metres in area. The interior was painted by the noted Bulgarian artist Haralampi Tachev. It was partially restored in 2005.

Мемориал Гробница на Александър I Батенберг се намира на бул. "Васил Левски" 81 в гр. София. Това е мавзолей и гроб на княз Александър Йозеф фон Батенберг (1857-1893), първият държавен глава на съвременна България.

Избран е на 17 април 1879 г. от Първото Велико Народно Събрание, заради приноса и участието му в Руско-Турската война. (Александър преминават Дунав на понтон с 13 пехотен батальон, след това Стара планина с известния 9ти кавалерийски полк на генерал Йосиф Гурко).
Князът повежда движението за изграждане на държавния суверенитет и обявява Съединението на Източна Румелия с Княжество България.
Батенберг е бил главнокомандващ на българската армия в Сръбско-българската война от 1885 г.
Руския император Александър III не подкрепя прокламираното Съединение и под влиянието на Ото фон Бисмарк, князът е принуден да абдикира през 1886 г..
Александър I умира в изгнание и първоначално е погребан в Грац, Австрия през 1893 г., Въпреки това, в съответствие с желанието му, тленните му останки са пренесени в българската столица. След служба в църквата "Св. Неделя" тялото му е преместен в църквата "Св. Георги" и след това в новоизградения мавзолей в центъра на града,.
Сградата е построена по поръчка на швейцарския архитект Херман Майер, в еклектичен стил, с елементи на нео-барок и неокласицизъм и отваря врати през 1897, мавзолеят е с височина 11 метра и площ от 80 квадратни метра. Интериорът е рисуван от изтъкнатия български художник Харалампи Тачев. Гробницата е частично реставрирана през 2005 г.
