Geocache Description:

This cache is based adjacent to the site of the recenlty demolished Mayfield Brickworks. The location is family friendly and wheelchair accessible, but the path can be popular with dogwalkers at certain times of the day, so stealth may be required.

The Mayfield Brickworks
The site of the Mayfield Brickworks comprised of: an incoming colliery blaes area; Crusher House; Grinding/Pan Mill area; Forming/ Brickmaking area and two continuous Hoffmann kilns. All of the buildings were made of brick, stiffened with steel beam frames and were roofed with corrugated iron. There was at least one major extension to the site in the 1950s with the building of a second kiln.

There were two, brick-built, 28 chamber, oil-fired Hoffmann kilns at Mayfield. The kilns dated from 1947 and from the 1950s. The Hoffmann kiln was patented by Hoffmann and Licht in 1858 and was modified in the 19th and 20th centuries, and was a popular kiln design in Britain.

The chimney was square in section, with a tapering profile that measured approximately 35.0m in height and was shared by the two kilns.

The works was owned by the Coltness Iron Co. (1947-c.1965); Caledonian Brick Co. (c.1965-78); Scottish Brick Corporation (1978-1984); Glasgow Iron and Steel Co. Ltd (1984-?early 2000s),  and Caradale Traditional Brick Ltd (early 2000s -December 2011.)

The workforce stood at about 60 in 2010 with a capacity of 14 million units of bricks per year. The site went into administration on 14th November 2011, and closed on Friday 2nd December 2011,  it has since been demolished.

Continue heading past the brickwork site on Wilton Road and you will reach a path, this is where to start the search. Good Luck!
