Geocache Description:

The last cache on Leg 3: A small camouflaged cache on Codicote Heath. We hope you enjoyed the journey.
Previous finders, please note that this cache has been relocated.

A group of cachers have gathered together to place caches along The Hertfordshire Way; a 194 mile circular route along public rights-of-way within the County of Hertfordshire. Rather than caches at every 0.1 mile we have tried to put together interesting hides with cool Bonus Caches.

Leg 3 stretches from Willian to Codicote for 11.8 miles. As you walk the path collect the information you need to find the Bonus Cache at waypoints along the route. We advise that you bring sturdy boots for very muddy terrain and a high visibility vest with you because a couple of short sections require walking along the road.

Codicote Heath

Cache Details
The village of Codicote lies on a chalk ridge on the dip slope of the Chiltern Hills. In the distant past, perhaps around A.D.600, a man with a name something like Cudda came to the area and founded a settlement. The earliest form of the name is recorded in 1002 as Cuthingcoton, meaning the "cottages of Cuthhere's people". The parish church is dedicated to St Giles and houses a chapel of the Holy Innocents.

The cache is located not far from the track across the heath. Please hide as (or better than) you find it.

... and finally
This is the final cache before you reach Codicote and the end of Leg 3 of the Hertfordshire Way. There are still a few more bonus numbers to collect and, of course, the Bonus Cache itself.

We hope you have enjoyed walking this part of Hertfordshire and have discovered some interesting places along the way. We certainly learned a lot in setting up the series (and put in a lot of walking to boot).

There are 14 legs on the Hertfordshire Way and many do not yet have an owner for this series. If you would like to get involved in helping complete this series then please get in touch via our profile.

Bonus Waypoints
The following Bonus Cache waypoints can be found close to this cache and en route to the end of the leg.

BonusQ - N51 51.170 W000 14.856 - How many rows of barbed wire on this fence? This is BonusQ.

BonusR - N51 51.184 W000 14.401 - Mr Jackson has left his phone number on this gate what are the last 3 digits? (0800 414BonusR).

BonusS - N51 51.120 W000 14.324 - Your final waypoint! This blue plaque commemorates Codicote Barracks. The number of Heritage icons at the bottom is BonusS

To the Next Cache
Return to the path and continue down the steps to the road. Cross the road to another track and follow this through the wood. Just before emerging onto a track between fields you need to choose the right hand path. The trail from here to the main road in Codicote can be very muddy, but you will finally reach your destination. Turn right and follow the road to the centre of the village.
