Geocache Description:

The Mission San Borja is an amazing site standing out in the middle of nowhere. Built first by the Jesuits (completed in 1762) out of adobe and later out of stone by the Dominicans (completed in 1801). The mission is not a ruin but a full standing church used at least once a year when people from miles away come to celebrate Dia de San Borja (Oct 11. I think).

There is an oasis next to the church. There are also several camp sites with palapas as well as two guest rooms, all maintained by the caretaker, Jose, and his family. There are also rock paintings which Jose's son will show you. Jose will give a great tour of the mission (don't forget the tip). The cache was hidden about a kilometer away out of respect for the mission. It is just passed the junction where the roads from Rosarito and Los Angeles Bay come together. You can park at 28° 45.071, 113° 45.913 and walk out on a point which gives a good view of the mission.

The road in from the Los Angeles Bay road has been graded and is really an easy hour+ drive (22 miles) and 4x4 is not necessary (the Rosarito road is OK too). We remember riding our dirt bikes in on this road when it took several hours. Cache is an ammo box full of goodies. Difficulty is based on the remoteness and the necessity to carry water and the usual survival stuff when you venture off the beaten path. The terrain is probably rated to high since it is a flat easy walk.

We hope you enjoy this special place of historical interest.
