Geocache Description:

I have always admired Henry David Thoreau's beliefs about nature and his enjoyment of a simple life. That is why I was so happy when I discovered a series of books written for children by D.B. Johnson, describing Henry's love of nature in a fiction format, enjoyable for children and adults alike. For young students it is an introduction to the biography of an important American, understanding conservation, and about the choices people can make in living their lives.

In Henry Hikes to Fitchburg, he and his friend decide to go to Fitchburg. Henry decides to walk while his friend decides to work until he has earned enough money to buy a train ticket.

Henry crossed the Sudbury River while his friend filled the woodbox in Mrs. Alcott's kitchen, earning 10 cents.

Henry carved a walking stick while his friend pulled all the weeds in Mr. Hawthorne's garden, earning 15 cents.

Henry climbed a tree while his friend moved the bookcases in Mr. Emerson's study, earning 15 cents.

Henry crossed a swamp and found a bird's nest in the grass while his friend cleaned out Mrs. Thoreau's chicken house.

Well, you will have to read the book to see the ending. But, it is all about choices, would you rather take the train or enjoy the walk?

Hopefully, you will enjoy the walk and please bring a pencil with you for signing the log.
