Grantham Canal - The Drift Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Alqunas: This cache was a 2ml tube attached to a real snail shell - have made a couple but now they're gone and I don't have any replacements (snail shells were found empty and unoccupied, no snails harmed in the making of these caches [:D] ) so have reluctantly decided to archive this cache but hope to place something else nearby soon. Thanks to everyone for visiting.

*** Congratulations to Eviepops for being FTF ***

This is a disguised nano cache close to the towpath of the beautiful Grantham Canal. Road access is from The Drift which is the road from Barrowby to Harlaxton. The road and the area is also known as Harlaxton Drift. The name comes from the deep cutting that had to be engineered when building the canal at this point; in some ways, although it may be difficult to tell so now, the canal becomes a bit like a tunnel without a roof. I believe that the name has come from the term to describe a horizontal, or near horizontal passageway that is cut through the ground in, mainly, underground mining.

Grantham Canal is a lovely place to walk or cycle and I hope that you will take the time to do so whilst doing this cache - there are an increasing number, and good variety of different types of caches on this section of the towpath as well as slightly further afield so why not do them at the same time.

The path surface is general quite good on this section, consisting of a small hardcore base, although it can get a bit muddy after sustained rain. Unfortunately the access points are not wonderful and it will probably prove necessary to lift larger buggies over the, fairly low, gate as you may not get them through the staggered barrier. Although the path would probably be suitable for all-terrain wheelchairs there doesn't appear to be any way of gaining access. Sorry.

Clearly the usual caveats regarding children and deep water apply, but other than that generic point, this is a family friendly area so enjoy the views, wildlife and fresh air.
