Many who live in this area may not be aware that the northernmost clash of arms in the Civil War took place in Hampden Township and Camp Hill, PA.
On June 28th, 1863, Confederate forces under Brigadier General Albert Jenkins advanced through Carlisle and Mechanicsburg enroute to Harrisburg. Union forces under Major General Darius Couch oversaw Harrisburg's preparations for defense. (See Airnut's Fort Couch Offset Cache GC163QG).
For the next three days, elements of both forces maneuvered and skirmished until the Confederates departed to reinforce Lee at Gettysburg.
Little remains to mark where soldiers fought in 1863. Commercial development has erased the woods and wheat fields that stood witness. It takes imagination to follow the battle.
This seven-stage multi will introduce interested cachers to
The Battle of Sporting Hill.
