How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

This multicache is a self-paced guided tour of Cmdr Alan Shepard Boulevard as it passes between NASA Langley Research Center and NASCAR Langley Speedway. The 0.8-mile (1.3km) round-trip walk is on a flat sidewalk. The cache is well off the sidewalk in 1.5 terrain. Expect the tour to take around an hour. Parking is immediately available at the cache coordinates.

Tools: To do this cache you will need a fully charged smart phone with internet access. Alternately, you could have a fully charged cell phone and a phone-a-friend accomplice at a computer to look up information from the internet for you. You will need to access specific geocaching.com trackable pages to find clues to go from waypoint to waypoint and, finally, to the cache. If you are not familiar with looking up and logging trackables by using their tracking numbers, please review the geocaching.com page discussing the topic.

Time: If you are using your car's wide-screen, color LCD GPS, walk fast! My Garmin 1350 almost didn't make it.

Important notes: Usually, additional information is available via hyperlink within the "About This Item" section of the trackable pages you will visit. At a couple stages, you may want to scroll down to Everplaid logs dated 31/Aug/13 to access those links. You have to scroll down to the Everplaid log of 31/Aug/13 on the last (11th) stage to find the location of the cache. ** Christmas Note: There had been a number of problems @ stage 4. The stage has been redone to preclude further problems.**

Thanks: I’d like to thank the SPEED! Mission Crew from around the globe - Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Sweden, and the US (Alabama, Kansas, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia) - who have made their trackables available for this multicache.

Stage 1:
Walk to the manhole cover at the cache coordinates here: N 37° 05.448 W 076° 23.182.
The trackable code you are looking for is: @#9%&K
@: Look at the metal ring encircling the manhole cover. Find “AASHTOM-306” on the outer ring. Look for the 7-letter word ¼ turn counterclockwise from AASHTOM. @ is the first letter of the 7-letter word.
#: # is the third letter of the 7 letter word.
%: Continue 1/2 turn around the outer ring and look at the three word phrase. The last letter of the first word is %.
&: Now look at the middle of the manhole cover. The number of letters in the middle of the cover is &.

Using the tracking code, look up the trackable. You will find an overview of the area's history and clues to Stage 2 on the trackable’s page.

Clues to Stages 2-11 and the final cache location are on subsequent trackable pages. Don't forget to "discover" the trackables! The cache and clues set up along the way were placed with permission.

Good luck – we all hope you enjoy the tour!
