This cache is designed to celebrate the new Big Tree Ridge Trail leading from the Newport TH into the northeast corner of Cougar Mountain. The effort required to obtain the land, and design and construct the 22 switchbacks up to Big Tree Ridge Trail are really impressive. And the work continues, with removal of invasive plants and planting of native vegetation.
The area looks amazingly "hammered" by man and nature. Apparently there was a landslide here in the last 20 - 30 years, as the uniform stands of young maples would seem to indicate.
I definitely recommend that you continue on up to visit Island in the Sky cache. See how long it takes you to get up there!
