Antonio Vicente González
"El Santo del Cólera"
(1817-1851)
Antonio Vicente González nació en 1817 en Villa de Agüimes. Era párroco y pastor de la Iglesia de Santo Domingo en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. En 1847 Gran Canaria padece la calamidad del hambre y frente a la Iglesia Antonio Vicente González monta un centro de caridad, donde reparte sus ingresos con los pobres. Murió el 22 de junio de 1851, víctima voluntaria del contagio de la peste y del cólera.
Antonio Vicente González was born in 1817 in Villa de Agüimes. He was a priest and pastor of the Church of Santo Domingo in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. 1847 there was a great famine. Antonio Vicente González built up a center of charity in front of the the church and gave all he collected to the poor. In 1851 pestilence and cholera came to Gran Canaria, but he did not escape. He took care of the sick and helped take away the dead. In the same year he was infected with cholera and died.
Antonio Vicente González wurde 1817 in Villa de Agüimes geboren. Er war Priester und Pfarrer der Kirche von Santo Domingo in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. 1847 herrschte eine große Hungersnot. Antonio Vicente González ließ vor der Kirche ein Zentrum der Wohltätigkeit errichten und verteilte die dort eingenommenen Spenden an die Armen. Als 1851 Pest und Cholera auf Gran Canaria ausbrach, flüchtete er nicht, sondern kümmerte sich um die Kranken und Toten. Im selben Jahr erlag er selbst der Cholera.
