Geocache Description:

Welcome to Saint Matthews Cemetery. You will be looking for a camofluaged pill bottle with a log (BYOP). Container is hidden along the boundary of the cemetery. Please RESPECT the site and no caching from dusk to dawn.

In 1845, German pilgrims left Bavaria to come to America. On their way from New Orleans to Indiana, an ice jam caused them to stop in Paducah. A few families settled in the area, decided to plant orchards and begin a new life. In the fall of 1856, a visiting parson, the Rev. Frederick Nestmann, discussed with the families about forming an organized church. On November 16, 1856, the Evangelical Lutheran St. Matthew Church was founded with twenty-one adult members. A church and parsonage were soon built, followed by the construction of a school for religious instruction.

In 1867 a fire destroyed the main church building. The parsonage, which was unharmed, was used as a chapel until a new church could be built. In 1886 the congregation constructed their second house of worship on Mayfield Road, thereby ending nineteen years of worship in the parsonage. During this time, the first English language service at St. Matthew was conducted. In 1921, St. Matthew had a new chapel at 600 South Fifth to minister to Paducah residents and the country church for the rural families.
