Time to celebrate the 5th CARL in Lethbridge & area!
Time for CARL5. It's all about quality as we celebrate 5 years of CARL! Let's see how creative we can be with the titles, cache containers and locations.
June 7-8: Welcome to CARL5, the fifth annual Cache and Relax Lethbridge event hosted by EO-LETH and coordinated by Morningdrifter, Stitch1 and TeamDJM. The event consists of a 24 hour cache-finding marathon culminating with a RELAX at the posted coordinates for refueling, story-telling and prize distribution. Check back closer to the date to see if there are any other changes. NO rain dances please!
There are three stages to the CARL5 event the HIDE, the HUNT and the RELAX.
NOTE: What have you seen elsewhere that you would like to bring to this area? Your “favorites”! Let’s create some memorable caches.
THE HIDE: hide one or more caches between now and Thursday, May 30th. The deadline is to ensure that the reviewers have sufficient time to review and publish all the hides for the event and to allow time to solve any issues that may arise. Let’s keep these caches dry.
Every cache listing submitted for CARL5 should include the following:
1) Name the cache: CARL5 (written without any spaces or dashes) at the START of the title (e.g. CARL5 - Big Hill Mystery ) to facilitate searches by keyword and an accurate list of published caches.
The naming process has changed at geocaching.com in the last few days. Cache Effect has offered to change all the cache names to reflect the new policy because all of the caches are locked at this time. If you are submitting a last minute cache, please use the new naming format with the CARL5 at the start of the title.
2) In the “short description” mention “. The caches for the CARL5 event are released early so that the geocaching community has an opportunity to plan their routes prior to the event start. The cache should not be located prior to 6 p.m. Friday June 7.”
3) In the “reviewer notes” state that the cache is placed for the CARL5 event and should be published the evening of Thursday, June 6th RULES for CARL5 caches: - hide caches you would enjoy finding yourself - unique and creative - all hides should be permanent following the event for everyone to find at their leisure - all hides must be hidden within 40 km of the posted coordinates - puzzle and multi-caches are allowed, but keep them short - solvable and findable within 30-45 minutes - only ONE “thoughtful micro” cache (too small for a pencil) hidden per geocaching account - NO nanos or (T.I.N.Y’s) please!
THE HUNT: At 6:00 pm on Friday June 7th, the hunt begins. You can find as many or as few caches as you want. During the hunt, please document the time of find in the logbook to inform subsequent finders how close they are on your tail.
NOTE: You are welcome to find any other caches in Lethbridge during the event, but only caches with CARL5 in the title count towards your finds total.
CAMPING: For anyone interested, there is a nice campground in Stirling which is only 2 blocks from the RELAX!. It costs $25.00 for serviced site and $10.00 un-serviced. The washrooms have flush toilets and FREE showers.
THE RELAX: The coordinates are for the RELAX on Saturday, June 8. At 6:00 pm, following a hectic (or leisurely) 24 hour marathon of caching the HUNT ends. This year we will gather at a private residence with a big yard! We will be there by 4:00 for the “RELAX”, voting, visiting, story telling. This is a family gathering so no alcohol or dogs please. We have a large grassed area and shaded areas too.
Please bring your lawn chairs and a picnic supper for your family. We have a BBQ and fire pit if you want to cook your supper. Please post a 'Will Attend' and indicate the number of people accompanying you.
FYI: If it rains, we have a big garage.
RECOGNITION/PRIZES: After supper, we will celebrate our successes and share our troubles and some prizes will be awarded. Please notify us if you have some prizes to donate to the event.
1) Most CARL5 finds (in the event of a tie, tie-breaker goes to the cacher with the most hides)
2) Best cache prepared and hidden by a someone under 16 (some parental help is ok, but prize goes to the child)
3) Best puzzle or multi cache
4) Best/worst mishap (must recount story at the party)
5) Most unique cache (title, cache container or location)
6) Most FTFs Prizes will be awarded at the RELAX, and you must be present to qualify for a prize.
PARTICIPATION: You are welcome to log the event as 'Attended' if you have participated in at least ONE stage of CARL5
LASTING EFFECT: New friendships, new caches in Lethbridge & new ideas for caches.
