A quick cache and dash close to this bridge that was the only one of its kind on the whole Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway system.
Cache is a smallish tube containing log only.
Please bring your own pen or pencil to log this cache.
The bridge, known in the official S & D bridge list as Wyke Champflower Bridge has been mostly infilled but the parapets are still obvious.
The bridge stands out as the only stonebuilt overbridge on the S & D to span both tracks with a single arch. This would infer that the bridge was built after the line was doubled in 1884.
It was near here in 1862 that the Somerset Central Railway being built southwards from Glastonbury joined up as an end on junction with the Dorset Central Railway coming from Templecombe. The meeting was celebrated by the insertion of a golden spike. In the same year the companies amalgamated to form the Somerset and Dorset Railway.
It was also near here between bridges 115 and 116 that a spur was built for a proposed but unfullfilled junction with the Wilts,Somerset and Weymouth line.
Please rehide cache carefully thank you.
