The inns were built along the busy roads between big towns and villages. The ancient Salt Road crossed Hortobágy, on which the salt from Maramures' salt mines shipped by raft to Tiszafüred was taken to this region. The inns played an important role in traffic on foot, on horseback, on carriages.

A csárdák a nagy határú mezővárosok és falvak között húzódó forgalmas utak mentén épültek. A Hortobágyon ilyen ősi útvonal volt a Só-út is, amelyen Máramarosi sóbányákból tutajon szállított sót vitték a középkorban a felső-tiszántúli vidék ellátására a tiszafüredi révtől.
Fontos szerepet töltöttek be az akkor gyalogosan, lóháton, fogatokkal, illetve szekerekkel zajló közlekedés és kereskedelem fellendülésében.
