Geocache Description:

Multi Cache along the Saline Ford Trail.

The main mission of the Special Forces is to train and lead unconventional warfare (UW) forces or a clandestine guerrilla force in an occupied nation. Special Forces were among the first American Soldiers to set foot in Afghanistan after 9-11 and were tasked with training the tribal fighters of the “Northern Alliance” to defeat and overthrow the Taliban.

Special Forces traces its roots as Army’s premier proponent of unconventional warfare from the Operational Groups of the Office of Strategic Services. The OSS was formed in World War II to gather intelligence and conduct operations behind enemy lines in support of resistance groups in Europe and North Africa. After the war, senior officers used their wartime OSS experience to formulate the doctrine of unconventional warfare that became the cornerstone of the modern day Special Forces. Special Forces are known as the Green Berets because of their distinctive green service headgear.

Special Forces are divided into five active duty (AD) and two Army National Guard (ARNG) Special Forces groups. A Special Forces company consists of usually six ODAs (Operational Detachments-A) or "A-Teams". An ODA consists of 12 men, each of whom has a specific function on the team. Each “A Team” is led by a Captain and has a Warrant Officer, Operations and Intelligence Sergeants, two Weapons Sergeants, two Engineer Sergeants, two Medical Sergeants, and two Communications Sergeants.

To be considered for entry into the Special Forces applicants must be male, 20-30 years old, be a U.S. citizen, qualify for a security clearance, qualify and volunteer for Airborne training, and achieve high scores on physical fitness tests and the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test. If approved, candidates enter SF Selection, commonly referred to as the “Q” course. Selection ranges from 55-95 weeks depending on the applicant's primary job field within Special Forces and their assigned foreign language capability.
