Geocache Description:

This multi-cache will take you on a short walk through the Wychwood neighbourhood.  All cache stages are wheelchair accessible but may possibly require some backtracking for the final. The final cache retrieval itself may not be able to be reached from a wheel chair.

Cache is not at the posted coordinates.  This is a short walk that will take you through this neighbourhood.  It is a relatively easy multi-stage cache.  The final cache can be found at: N 43 40.[abc]  W079 25.[d]

The first waypoint will take you to Artscape Wychwood Barns.  The buildings you see used to be TTC Streetcar barns, built in the early 1900's.  (You can still see part of the old streetcar tracks in the street nearby).  They were in use until 1992.   (When I was a little girl, I used to come here during lunch hours and "trespass" on the closed-off property, peeking in the windows and looking at the dusty, long-forgotten streetcars). The area was converted into a vibrant community centre and urban park with official opening in 2008.  It contains subsidized art housing and studios, public green space and a playground, a greenhouse, a vegetable garden, a farmer's market on Saturdays, a beach volleyball court, an outdoor oven for community use, and office space for many local community groups.  What year was the first car barn built?  Look up and you will find the answer.  Take these four digits and add them together; minus 9 from this number.  This is 'a'.

The second waypoint will take you to a wooden gate.  There is a small window cut out of this gate.  How many corners does this shape have?  Add 5 to that number.  This is 'b'.

Go through the gate and you will be entering Wychwood Park, a former gated artists' community.  It was founded as an artists colony in the late nineteenth century.  The area was amalgamated into the city of Toronto in 1909 but still remains a private community (the streets and amenities are paid for by local residents and the community is managed by an executive council).  Enjoy your walk through this quiet neighbourhood and the beautiful gardens and houses.  The third waypoint will take you near the former home of famous Canadian Marshall McLuhan, a philosopher of communication theory. What is the number of his house?  (No need to trespass onto the property, the number is indicated with three different signs - one on the fence, one on a tree and one on the house itself).  Take this number and add 3 to it.  This is 'c'.

The previous waypoint will have also allowed you to see the pond that was created on the property by artificially damming one of Toronto's lost rivers - Taddle Creek.  The fourth waypoint will take you a few steps away where you can see Taddle Creek quietly leaving the pond and heading under Davenport Road. This is the only place in the city you can see any remnants of Taddle Creek.  The rest is piped under the city all the way down to the lake. At this fourth waypoint, you will see a pole with a 3 character length alphanumeric code (ignore the letters).  Add the digits together, multiply by 2 and then add 141 to this number.  This is 'd'.

You should now have the coordinates to the final cache.  The cache is not on Wychwood property. It is also not in the middle of Davenport Road... looking at the final coordinates on google maps may help you if there is GPS bounce.
