In 2005, Roger Castillo was walking his dog along the river trail and noticed some curious bones in earth recently eroded by storm drainage. He realized they could be something special, so he called the Santa Clara Valley Water District and San Jose State University to report his find.
Fast efforts to secure the site and begin excavation were rewarded. Castillo's discovery was the remains of a juvenile Columbian mammoth, a creature that roamed this valley 14000 years ago. Several large bones and tusks were found.
The reconstructed mammoth, nicknamed "Lupe" for the Guadalupe River, is the basis of an informative and interactive display at the Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose. Check out the details at https://www.cdm.org/mammothdiscovery/visitlupe.html . Links on that page also tell you more about the discovery of Lupe and her preservation.
