Old hotel relocated to Greytown
The grey two storied building that can be seen through the trees down the last driveway in Jellicoe Street is the relocated and refurbished, Tinui Hotel. For many years Tinui which is on the Castlepoint Road, 50 odd kms. east of Masterton had a large, 76 year old "historic" hotel which had served the community for many years after two earlier hotels on the site had been burnt down.
In 2007 as a consequence of difficult economic times the owners decided to sell the building to be relocated so a smaller more economic building could be constructed. The Masterton District Council agreed to the relocation plan and this caused considerable distress amoungst some members of the local community who took an appeal to the Environment Court. The Environment Court dismissed the appeal agreeing that the building simply did not measure highly up the scale as a building of historic heritage.
In 2008 the building was shifted in two parts on to it's new site in Greytown where it was reassembled, refurbished and now serves as a domestic residence.
