Lake Metroparks manages this 153 acres of land through an agreement with the Lake County Commissioners. This beautiful park is located on Lake Erie and offers beautiful views of the Lake, creek, and natural surroundings. A short hike is required.
This is one of the last remaining natural estuaries in Ohio. Steelhead trout spawn and migratory birds find shelter here. The Nature Conservancy, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and Friends of Arcola Creek (a Lake County preservation group) have all been instrumental in the preservation of the natural refuge.
An estuary is a special zone where the properties of a river and a lake or ocean mix to create a unique and critical habitat for plants and animals. Estuaries are some of the most productive ecosystems in the world. Over 25 species of plants, animals, reptiles, and birds that are listed as endangered, threatened, or rare can be found in the Arcola Estuary.
As you walk down the path towards the lake, notice the pier and your surroundings. You may find traces of grape vines across the way, also common in the Grand River Valley Winery Region (which Lake County is a part of). This cache requires someone of medium height to find it.
