Salendo da Cittiglio dopo un quarto d’ora di strada in auto, si raggiungono i due paesini di Vararo e di Casere. La curiosità di questi due paesi è che, pur essendo isolati in mezzo alle montagne e a soli 700 metri di distanza l’uno dall’altro, fanno parte di due comuni diversi: Vararo è parte del Comune di Cittiglio, Casere del Comune di Laveno Mombello.
Driving 15 minutes by car from Cittiglio, you will find the two little villages of Vararo and Casere. It’s curious that these two little villages, isolated in the middle of the mountains and only distants 700 meters, are part of two different municipalities: Vararo is part of the Municipality of Cittiglio, Casere is part of the Municipality of Laveno Mombello.

Vararo, paesino collocato sul ciglio della dorsale montana dei Pizzoni, ebbe particolare importanza nei secoli XVIII e XIX. Proprio in quegli anni infatti, il nucleo abitativo ebbe un notevole sviluppo. L’aumento degli abitanti determinò condizioni di vita più difficoltose, tanto che alcuni decisero di emigrare stagionalmente per la Francia e la Svizzera. Le case erano semplici, costruite con materiale come il sasso e mattoni, abbellite da rustici cortili. Solitamente sull’aia erano collocate cucine con camino e locali per la lavorazione del latte e del formaggio (la casera), mentre al piano superiore vi erano disimpegni e stanze da letto. Altri due elementi indispensabili erano il fienile con la stalla e il portico, simbolo della riunione delle numerose famiglie. A volte si aggiungevano l’ovile, il pollaio e le latrine. Queste tipiche abitazioni rurali erano indissolubilmente legate all’attività contadina, dedita alla pastorizia e all’agricoltura. Oggi molte di queste case non esistono più e pochi sono i rustici ben conservati che caratterizzano l’aspetto alpino del paese. Da Vararo partono numerosi sentieri un tempo percorsi dagli abitanti del luogo, ma ancora oggi disponibili per curiose passeggiate immersi nella natura. Infatti, proprio per quest’ultimo aspetto naturalistico e per la tranquillità del luogo, il paese è ancora oggi meta di diversi visitatori in cerca di pace e montagna. Parcheggiate auto e moto al Waypoint e fate una passeggiata fra le stradine del paese! A Vararo si trova un grande roseto con circa 3000 esemplari di rose, visitabile gratuitamente ogni weekend da maggio a ottobre.

Vararo, a small village located on the edge of the mountain ridge of Pizzoni, had particular importance in the 18th and 19th centuries. In those years, the housing unit had a remarkable development. The increase of the inhabitants resulted in more difficult living conditions, so much so that some decided to migrate seasonally to France and Switzerland. The houses were simple, made of material such as stone and brick, embellished with rustic courtyards. Usually on the farmyard were placed kitchens with fireplace and rooms for milk and cheese processing (the “casera”), while upstairs there were vestibules and bedrooms.
Two other essential elements were the barn with the stables and the portico, a symbol of the meeting of many families. Sometimes they added the sheepfold, the chicken coop and the latrines. These typical rural houses were inextricably tied to farming activities, dedicated to sheep farming and agriculture.
Today many of these houses no longer exist and few are the well-preserved rustic characterizing the country's Alpine appearance.
From Vararo originate numerous hiking paths at one time by the locals, but still available to curious walks immersed in nature. In fact, for this latter aspect and to the tranquility of the place, the country is still a destination for many visitors looking for peace and mountains. Park the car or the motorcycle at the Waypoint and walk on the little streets of the village! In Vararo there is a big rose garden, with more than 3000 exemplaires. You can visit it for free every weekend from may to october.
