During the plague epidemic of 1691 the citizens swore an oath if the epidemic passed away they would set up a trinity statue in the Buda Castle, on the Trinity square, in front of the Matthias church. The epidemic ended in 1706 and the statue was made as well but three years later, in 1709 a new epidemic erupted. The habitants vowed this time to erase a higher, a more ornate statue at the place of the previous statue, if they survived this epidemic too. So happened that in 1712 the old (this) statue was transposed to Zsigmond Square and on its original place, in the Castle, a 14,4 m high baroque statue was set up in 1713. This statue on Zsigmond Square is Budapest's oldest public space statue can be seen today.
Az 1691-es pestisjárvány során a polgárok esküt tettek, hogyha a járvány elmúlik, hálából egy szentháromság-szobrot állítanak a Várban, a Szentháromság téren, a Mátyás-templom előtt. A járványnak vége lett, és 1706-ban fel is állították a szobrot, de három évvel később, 1709-ben újabb járvány pusztított. A lakosság ezúttal azt fogadta meg, hogy nagyobb, díszesebb szobrot állít az előző helyén, ha ezt a járványt is túlélik. Így történt, hogy 1712-ben (ezt) a korábban állított szobrot a mai Zsigmond térre helyezték át, és helyébe, a Várban, 1713-ban egy 14,4 m magas barokk szobrot állítottak. Ez a Zsigmond téri szobor Budapest legrégebbi, ma is látható, köztéri szobra.
