Bażantarnia stała się miejscem masowego wypoczynku elblążan na początku XVIII wieku. Wtedy to, mieszkańcy nazywali ją Vogelsang (niem. Ptasi śpiew). Początkowo podzielona była na dwa obszary - chroniony i użytkowy, dzięki czemu poza funkcją rekreacyjną, las pełnił także zaplecze gospodarcze ówczesnego Elbląga. W latach 1810-11 August Abbeg wybudował karczmę, która funkcjonuje dziś jako Restauracja Myśliwska. Druga restauracja (pod nazwą Thumberg) powstała po latach na Górze Chrobrego (Krucza), jednak w latach 50. XX wieku została ostatecznie rozebrana. W 1913 park zostały włączony w granice administracyjne miasta.
Wraz z objęciem przez elbląski magistrat opieki nad parkiem, pojawiło się w nim wiele nowych obiektów użyteczności publicznej. Wybudowano nowe mostki, oznakowano trasy piesze oraz powstały tak charakterystyczne budowle jak muszla koncertowa, Parasol, czy wieża widokowa, zwana Wieżą Bismarcka (rozebrana po wojnie). Po zakończeniu II wojny światowej i włączeniu Elbląga w granice Polski, nowi mieszkańcy nazwali park Bażantarnią, ze względu na mnogość tego ptactwa w lesie. Jeszcze w latach 90. XX wieku można było się natknąć w parku na liczne bażanty.

Pheasantry became a place of rest mass of citizens of Elbląg in the early eighteenth century. At that time, people called it Vogelsang (German bird singing). Initially, was divided into two areas - protected and productive, so that outside the function recreational forest has served as a base of the then Elblag. In the years 1810 to 1811 August Abbega built an inn that operates today as a restaurant Fighter. The second restaurant (the name Thumberg) was established after years on the Mount of the Brave (Krucza), but in the 50s Twentieth century was finally demolished. In 1913, the park has been included in the administrative boundaries of the city.
Along with taking over the care of Elblag magistrate park appeared in many new public buildings. Built new bridges, marked hiking and built structures so characteristic of the band shell, umbrella, or tower, called the Tower of Bismarck (demolished after the war). After the Second World War and the turn of Elblag in the Polish borders, new residents have called Pheasant Park, because of the abundance of birds in the forest.
