Geocache Description:

MGA13

Welcome to the 10th Annual Metroparks Geocaching Adventure 2013, a geocaching game placed by MiGO members in partnership with the Huron-Clinton Metroparks. In order to complete the series, you will need to find the special cache hidden in each of the 13 Metroparks.

For links to all of the caches in the series please Click Here. At each cache obtain the five digit code, found in the cache on the cover. Copy them exactly. They are to be placed in the appropriate locations in the brochure found here. That section of the brochure may be submitted for inclusion in the drawing for one of the 2014 Metroparks Annual Passes.

Those that log their finds of all 13 Geocaches will be E-mailed instructions as to how to submit their entry. Each cache’s 5 digit codes will also provide the key to a puzzle. Instructions as to how to obtain the puzzle piece should Click Here.

We will be holding the 10th Annual geocachers picnic at Hudson Mills Metropark on September 7. Watch the Metroparks Geocaching Adventure 2013 Picnic Page for more details.

The theme for this year's series is Animals.
The animal highlighted in Indian Springs Metropark is the Allegheny Mound Ant.

Allegheny Mound Builders – Ant Engineers (Indian Springs) Near the edges of the forest, field or wetlands, you may come across a colony of Allegheny Mound Builder Ants. They live in mounds that are 3-5 feet in diameter, and up to two feet tall. Each one may contain 10,000 workers and from 2-1407 queens! Like humans, the ants engineer their homes to provide the proper environment for their children. Their eggs and larvae have specific warmth and humidity needs, so the workers spend all day moving them from chamber to chamber to ensure their proper development. The steep sides of the mound heat up in the morning sun, and worker ants clear vegetation from the mound to reduce shade, by injecting plants with formic acid. Sometimes, several mounds will be seen close to each other, as a new colony will branch off of an existing mound, eventually becoming independent. At Indian Springs Metropark, you can see these mounds in several areas along the Woodland and Bike trails, and around the Environmental Discovery Center (EDC) and Park Office. It’s best to observe these ant engineers from a slight distance. Although not particularly venomous, they can inflict an uncomfortable bite if provoked. If you would like to learn more about the Allegheny Mound Builders, stop inside the EDC between the hours of 9am – 5pm, to check out the interpretive displays.

The cache is located less than 30 feet from the trail so bushwhacking further than that is not necessary and is discouraged to reduce impact on the environment. Please park at the coordinates shown in the Waypoint table and start your walk at the Trailhead coordinates.
