Geocache Description:

An easy walk in lovely woodland with the chance for further exploration.

Hepburn Wood captures the inherent qualities of Northumberland perfectly –broad, sweeping vistas and tranquil landscapes. A walk along the forest road is a pleasant stroll on the old carriage drive built when Hepburn was a private estate belonging to neighbouring Chillingham Park. A longer walk up the side of Hepburn Crag is marked by two sharp climbs, but you will be rewarded with stunning views from the top of the lofty sandstone escarpments. On the heather-clad natural vantage point of Hepburn Crag, the remains of a hill fort suggest people have inhabited this site for at least 4000 years.
Bronze Age people have left much more evidence behind including ritual and burial monuments. Many Bronze Age burials have been found in North Northumberland, and nearly all were found by ploughing in the 19th century. Most lay in cists or urns. A cist is a roughly rectangular structure used for inhumation and cremation burials and formed from four or more stone slabs set on edge, and covered by one or more horizontal slabs. The base may be a slab, unaltered earth or clay. Cists may be built on the surface or dug into the ground. They are usually buried beneath a pile of stones which form a cairn. Cache placed by kind permission of the Forestry Commission.
