Breton Bay Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

dmenkart: Sadly, the old wooden boat under which this geocache was hidden has gone, maybe washed out to sea in a recent storm. A few people have reported that fact and one even sent photos. I don't live nearby, so I can't go place one in an alternative location any time soon. So, with regrets, I am archiving this geocache. My family and I have enjoyed reading the reports from people who have found it over the years.

Geocache Description:

You can drive or walk on Joe Hazel Road to this beautiful Breton Bay view. Note, if the boat was still afloat, sailors would not see the cache, only scuba divers and fish.

This is a lovely side trip to take when visiting Leanordtown in historic St. Mary's County, Maryland. The cache is at the end of Joe Hazel Road, an area that is being rebuilt after the devastation suffered during Hurricane Isabel. Some of the homes in the area belong to fishermen and women who can still be seen going out every morning on their wooden boats to fish for crabs. Other homes are owned by weekend visitors. It is a peaceful area, quiete even on spring and summer weekends. There is an active pier nearby and a family run restaurant where as many people arrive by boat as they do by car. The restaurant building used to be a oyster shucking center.

Heading back to Newtowne Neck Road (where you turned off on Joe Hazel) you can continue on to St. Francis Xavier Church, the oldest Catholic church in the original 13 colonies.
