Forests and trees in particular have a great deal of folklore and mythology associated with them the following being just one example of the origin of the Ribbon Tree – according to folklore “Spirit-caused” diseases were diagnosed by taking the clothes of the victim to certain trees associated with spirits. The clothing is left at the tree, as are offerings, and a prayer is said. The next morning the clothes are checked and if found to be disturbed, the victim is known to have been enchanted.
The lingering rustic practice consists of hanging a rag, a ribbon or some other offering on a particular tree (significantly usually sited at a crossroads) for luck and for the granting of wishes. A pink ribbon to wish for love, a blue ribbon to wish for protection, a green ribbon to wish for wealth, and a purple or indigo ribbon to wish for greater occult knowledge…. and even today the superstitious amongst us cannot pass a Ribbon Tree without adding our token – just in case?
This Ribbon Tree used to be magnificently decorated and if you look very hard you can still see a few remnants remaining today. However, the tree started to perish under the weight of the many tokens placed on it’s branches and subsequently the practice was forbidden – PLEASE RESPECT THIS.
So why have we brought you to this tree to look at the remaining shreds of a discontinued superstition? Well look beyond the tree, look out over Abbots Bay and you have the most spectacular views over Derwentwater - you will already feel that all your wishes have been granted …..and remember the tree must have been associated with spirits in the past for the practice to transpire here originally – make your wish, you may not be alone:O!
